The John Muir Trail (JMT) continues to be a challenging yet rewarding experience for the author as they navigate through the wilderness. On day 13, they leave Evolution Lake behind and make their way to Muir Trail Ranch (MTR), a popular resupply point for hikers. The trail takes them through a sloping descent into an old-growth forest, with the rock face changing from white granite to dark jagged slate, making the trail more difficult to navigate.

Muir Trail Ranch

MTR is a crucial stop for hikers, offering a resupply office, store, and camping facilities. While it has its advantages, such as a potable water station and charging station, it also has its drawbacks. The author notes that the camping spots are tight and not close to the river, and the amenities within the ranch itself are not open to hikers.

The resupply process is quick and easy, but the store closes promptly at 5 p.m., making it challenging for slower hikers.

The author reflects on their resupply experience, keeping main meals and snacks, but swapping out some items, such as bacon bits and seasoning, to reduce unnecessary space in their pack. They also note the importance of packing essential toiletries, like contact solution and extra contacts, due to the dry and windy conditions on the trail.

Selden Pass and Bear Creek JCT

On day 14, the author tackles Selden Pass, a moderately graded climb with long switchbacks amidst manzanita bushes. The trail winds around boulders and trees, making the climb sneaky and challenging. The author notes that the view from the top is outstanding, with a clear view of Marie lakes and the Northern peaks.

The descent from Selden Pass is simple, with plenty of spaces to pull off and enjoy the scenery. The author reflects on the importance of being pain-free, as it allows them to appreciate the beauty around them. They note that their past self, struggling with pain and injury, missed out on the good of the trip.

Vermillion Valley Resort

On day 15, the author visits Vermillion Valley Resort (VVR), a popular hiker-friendly side quest located on Edison Lake. The resort offers amenities like showers, a post office, a small store, laundry, and a restaurant. However, the author notes that the trail to the resort is rugged and steep, with almost no camping options and no water source along the way.

The author concludes their journey on day 16, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of the JMT. They note that the experience has been transformative, allowing them to appreciate the beauty around them and find joy in the simple things.
