A Pacific Crest Trail hiker shares their experience at PCT Days, a festival for hikers, and their journey to Crater Lake...

The Pacific Crest Trail is a challenging and scenic route that spans from California to Canada. One hiker, who has been making their way through Oregon, recently attended PCT Days, a festival for hikers. The event was held in Cascade Locks, a small town just outside of Portland.

Cross-State Logistics

Getting to PCT Days was an adventure in itself. The hiker took the Greyhound from Ashland, which was a 5-hour ride with no legroom. They then walked 6 miles through Portland to catch the Gorge Bus, which dropped them off at Cascade Locks. The return trip was more comfortable, thanks to a ride with a fellow hiker who had rented a mini-van.

Broken Promises

At PCT Days, the hiker had a few goals, including replacing their trusty pants, which had been with them since California. The pants had been repaired multiple times, but had finally reached the point of no return. The hiker was sad to see them go, as they had become a part of their identity. They noted that in modern society, replacement is often the first choice, while repairing is a less common option.

More Than Pants

The hiker reflected on their attachment to the pants, which had been with them through thick and thin. They had developed a strong bond with the pants, which had kept them cool, warm, and protected from the elements. The hiker saw the pants as a part of themselves, and was reluctant to let them go. They eventually replaced the pants, but not before saying goodbye to their trusty companions.

The hiker also participated in various activities at PCT Days, including a cowboy camp set-up race, hang challenge, and social scavenger hunt. They caught up with fellow hikers and enjoyed some free gear and prizes. However, they were exhausted by the end of the first day and spent most of the second day resting.

Back At It

After PCT Days, the hiker was ready to get back to the woods and mountains. They returned to the trail and found themselves in an endless pine forest, surrounded by lichen-covered branches and soft shade. They met up with a fellow hiker, Pack Rat, and continued on their journey to Crater Lake National Park. The hiker was excited to reach the park, and was relieved to arrive just in time to grab a scoop of ice cream before the shop closed. They are now continuing on their journey, with their new pants and a renewed sense of purpose.
