Hiker Prepares for Challenging White Mountain National Forest Terrain
A hiker faces a daunting challenge as they enter the White Mountain National Forest, preparing for a steep climb up Mount Moosilauke with a full pack and limited opportunities for resupply

The White Mountain National Forest is known for its rugged terrain, and one hiker is about to embark on the most challenging part of their journey so far. After a surprise thunderstorm overnight, the hiker woke up to the sound of rain pattering on their tent ceiling and decided to take a shorter day to prepare for the climb ahead.
The Approach to Mount Moosilauke
The hiker planned to hike only 12.5 miles, stopping at the Hikers Welcome Hostel to charge their devices and resupply with limited gluten-free options. This would be one of the last opportunities to buy food for the next 100 miles or so, making the upcoming climb even more daunting. With a full pack, the hiker will face steep ascents and descents, as well as extended periods above treeline.
Preparing for the Challenge
The hiker spent the afternoon preparing for the challenge ahead, knowing that the next section of the trail would be the hardest part of their entire journey. They have never hiked on terrain like this before, and the thought of steep ascents and descents, as well as being above treeline for an extended period, is making them nervous. Despite the apprehension, the hiker is determined to push on, hoping to get an early start the next morning.
The Road Ahead
The hiker is currently camped at the Jeffers Brook Shelter, located at the base of Mount Moosilauke. The shelter is one of the loveliest campsites they have seen on the AT, with pine trees reaching high overhead and a soft bed of needles on the ground. The sound of a nearby bubbling brook is a soothing accompaniment to the hiker's nervous anticipation of the challenge ahead. With a good night's sleep, the hiker hopes to tackle the mountain with confidence and determination.
The hiker's journey is not just about the physical challenge, but also about the mental preparation and determination required to overcome the obstacles ahead. As they face the daunting task of climbing Mount Moosilauke, they will need to draw on all their skills and experience to succeed. The White Mountain National Forest is a formidable opponent, but with the right mindset and preparation, the hiker is ready to take on the challenge.
