Search and rescue operations are undergoing a significant transformation with the adoption of new technologies. Teams like the Summit County Rescue Group (SCRG) and Seattle Mountain Rescue (SMR) are leveraging innovative tools to improve their response times and effectiveness.
Introduction to New Technologies
The use of drones in search and rescue is becoming increasingly common. SCRG and SMR are using drones equipped with speakers, spotlights, and payload capabilities to locate and assist stranded individuals. These drones can fly long distances, scout routes, and even drop supplies to those in need. For example, SCRG used a drone to locate two hikers who were stranded in a thunderstorm, and the drone's speaker was used to direct them back to the trailhead.
Advancements in Software and Hardware
In addition to drones, search and rescue teams are also utilizing advanced software and hardware. Programs like Eagle Eyes scan a drone's live video feed for anomalies on the ground, allowing rescuers to mark locations on a shared map. Exoskeletons, like those provided by HyperShell, are being used to assist rescuers with hiking and carrying gear. These electric leg braces enable rescuers to go further with less effort, making it possible to reach stranded individuals more quickly.
Evaluation of New Technologies
SMR and SCRG are currently evaluating new technologies, including a device from Bimodal that adds an electric motor to a litter wheel. This device can aid rescuers in extracting individuals from steep or technical terrain. They are also looking into the use of e-bikes, which have become a core tool for many of their backcountry rescues. E-bikes allow rescuers to ferry drones and gear to remote locations, and they are also being used for urban searches.
Future of Search and Rescue
The integration of new technologies into search and rescue operations is expected to continue, with AI-generated beta and post-mission data analysis becoming increasingly important. SMR is building an app that will provide rescuers with AI-generated information on mission conditions, terrain, and recommended gear. The use of these technologies is not only improving response times but also keeping rescuers safer. As Wes Cooper, emerging technologies director for SMR, notes, technology is augmenting rescuers, not replacing them, and enabling them to accomplish their primary mission of bringing everyone home safely from the backcountry.
