A Pacific Crest Trail hiker describes a fast, 30-mile day in Oregon with minimal elevation gain, detailing encounters...

A Pacific Crest Trail hiker covered 30 miles in 11 hours through a flat section of Oregon, prompting the reflection that "Oregon IS Flat." The day's total elevation gain was less than 3,000 feet, making it perfect for the long distance.

The morning hike was cool and cruisy through the forest. Even a hiking companion named Drom, who usually hikes far ahead, commented on how fast the hiker was moving. The hiker's watch recorded an average pace exceeding three miles per hour, flying compared to the previous day's 2.2 mph.

A stop for water at a spring was interrupted by bold and curious local mountain jays. The birds were very brave, getting close to investigate the silver foil of a pop tart, which triggered the hiker's irrational fear of birds. The snack was inhaled quickly to escape the encounter.

More than 15 miles were completed by lunchtime. The break involved removing shoes and relaxing in the shade for a meal. This included a peanut butter and date wrap, turkey jerky, trail mix, and rosemary seasoned nuts from a Trader Joe's resupply, which has been a win. The hiker felt cozy enough to fall asleep but had no time for napping with another 15 miles to go.

The afternoon was much like the morning, quick and cruisy. The end of the day was completely flat for miles, passing Timothy Lake. The water was an incredible teal color. Smoke from nearby wildfires made the sun look bright orange, creating a pretty reflection on the lake. The hiker could have camped there but continued to keep up with Drom ahead.

Camp at Little Crater Lake

The day ended at the planned campsite near Little Crater Lake. As the name suggests, this little lake rivals the bright blue color of Crater Lake. Icy cold water from the lake was used to fill a hydration bladder, which was refreshing after the long day.

Evening Routine and Reflection

With tired feet, dinner was prepared from the comfort of the tent. The meal consisted of Trader Joe's squiggle noodles, topped with a crunchy onion and garlic seasoning shared by Drom. Dark chocolate-covered pistachios finished the meal. The hiker reflected that they would have never imagined being strong enough to hike 30 miles in 11 hours, calling it an exciting accomplishment. They speculated it might be their last 30-mile day on the trail, uncertain of what lay ahead.
