## Running Down a Dream in West Virginia The Appalachian Trail spans 14 states, but West Virginia has the shortest stretch, with only 4 miles along its border. For one hiker, this section was a highlight of their journey, offering breathtaking views and a warm welcome from locals. ## A Marathon Day The hiker began their day at the Jim & Molly Denton shelter, where they planned to hike 18 miles. However, they received news that their daughter was planning to surprise them in Harper's Ferry, and they decided to push on, covering an additional 10 miles to reach the iconic Bears Den hostel. This decision proved to be a challenge, as the hiker encountered a grueling 14-mile roller coaster section, with steep and rocky "ups and downs." ## The Roller Coaster The hiker described the roller coaster as "hard," especially after already hiking 18 miles. They encountered difficulties with navigation, including poorly marked white blazes and a lack of phone signal. The hiker also highlighted a particularly hazardous road crossing that they found surprising, given its lack of discussion among other hikers. ## Hitting the Wall As the hiker approached the 3-mile mark before the hostel, they hit the infamous "wall," a phenomenon familiar to marathon runners. They had to stop and eat dinner, before continuing on to the hostel. Upon arrival, they were greeted by a locked door, but were eventually let in by another hiker, Groot. ## A Refreshing Rest The next morning, the hiker woke up feeling refreshed after a hot shower, pizza, and a warm bed. They were able to appreciate the beautiful views from Bear's Den Rocks before beginning their hike. The remaining 4 miles of the roller coaster proved to be less grueling, and the hiker was able to enter West Virginia, where they were greeted with a warm welcome from locals. ## A Special Moment The hiker's daughter arrived in Harper's Ferry, and they were able to surprise her in the parking lot.
