Dale "Grey Beard" Sanders, age 91, has become the oldest recorded backpacker to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. He reached the summit of Mt. Katahdin (5,269 feet) this morning, completing the 2,200-mile route within a single calendar year to claim the age record, according to a report from Backpacker.

His journey was not without significant challenges. Sanders faced fatigue, an injury that required hospitalization just 142 miles from the finish, and the loss of a loved one. He finished the trail six days before the record cutoff.

The Grueling Final Push

Earlier this month, Sanders wrote about the immense difficulty of the undertaking. He described a particularly tough week.

This record-setting hike marks the second time Sanders has claimed the title of oldest AT thru-hiker. For more on the demanding nature of such feats, see our stats on trail completion.

A History of Record-Setting Endurance

Sanders first set the Appalachian Trail age record in 2017 at 82 years old. During that hike, he told Outside magazine he experienced the coldest temperatures of his life, with single-digit conditions. His greatest fear was being wet, cold, and alone in the wilderness without a way to warm up.

The record was taken from him four years later by his friend M.J. "Nimblewill Nomad" Eberhart, who completed the trail at age 83. Eberhart said at the time that Sanders was likely the only person who could truly understand the feat.

Eberhart has been a vocal supporter of Sanders' latest attempt. Following the new record, Eberhart told Backpacker he was ready to pass the torch. This friendly rivalry highlights the unique standings in endurance records.

Beyond the Appalachian Trail

The AT is just one entry in Sanders' catalog of endurance achievements. His list of age-record thru-hikes and expeditions includes other major routes.

Now 91, Sanders has added what may be his most ambitious accomplishment yet, once again pushing the limits of human potential on a long-distance trail. His journey, overcoming significant injuries, serves as a profound inspiration.
