Crossing into Wyoming: A Journey Along the Continental Divide Trail
A thru-hiker's account of navigating the challenging terrain and diverse landscapes of Wyoming's Continental Divide Trail, from the hazy pink sunrise to the majestic mountain vistas.
## Wyoming's Uncharted Territory The Continental Divide Trail, a 3,100-mile route spanning from New Mexico to Montana, offers adventurers a unique blend of breathtaking landscapes and unforgiving terrain. For one thru-hiker, the journey through Wyoming's vast wilderness was a defining experience, marked by encounters with geothermal wonders, grizzly tracks, and the thrill of a daring log jump. ## A Morning of Volcanic Vapor As the hiker began their day, the eastern sky transformed into a hazy pink hue, gradually brightening into a drop of blood that rose above the trees. The air was heavy with smoke, and the sky took on a brownish tint, a testament to the region's volcanic activity. The landscape itself was a marvel, with steam billowing from meadows of black stone and the earth spewing jets of water, filling the spaces between old burn scars. ## Navigating the Crowds As the hiker entered the Yellowstone region, they were met with a sea of tourists, boardwalks, and congested roads. The thru-hiker expertly navigated the crowds, weaving between groups and gently pushing through those who blocked the path. The sudden silence of the forest was a welcome respite, allowing the hiker to reconnect with nature and their surroundings. ## A Day of Swimming and Resupplying The hiker's journey continued with a refreshing swim in the Firehole River, followed by a reunion with fellow hikers and an evening walk to camp. The next day brought a resupply stop in a village, where the hiker replenished their supplies and caught a hitch back to the trail. The warmth of the day was tempered by the threat of approaching storms, and the hiker remained vigilant, filtering water and keeping an eye on the sky. ## Confronting Fear and Triumph The hiker's most daunting challenge came in the form of a log spanning a 100-foot gap, a feat that required courage and determination. With a deep breath and a steady heart, the hiker took the leap, successfully crossing the chasm and emerging on the far side, elated and triumphant. ## The Journey Continues As the hiker pressed on, they encountered a wolf pack's tracks, pressed deeply into the cracked earth, and a champagne sky that spilled sunlight across the sagebrush. The mountains were returning, their steep walls and jagged ridges a reminder of the challenges that lay ahead. The hiker's journey was far from over, and the future awaited, shrouded in clouds and raven-dark mountains.
