A hiker's account of crossing the Connecticut River and entering New Hampshire on the Appalachian Trail.

A New Chapter on the Appalachian Trail
As hikers on the Appalachian Trail (AT) continue their journey, they often face new challenges and experiences. For one hiker, crossing the Connecticut River marked a significant milestone - entering the state of New Hampshire. This moment is not only a geographical change but also a psychological one, as hikers reflect on their progress and the challenges that lie ahead.
A Respite from the Bugs
The hike into New Hampshire began with a 9-mile trek through the woods, where the hiker was plagued by mosquitoes. Despite using DEET spray, the bugs continued to buzz around their ears, making the journey uncomfortable. However, once the hiker emerged onto the road in Norwich, Vermont, they found a brief respite from the biting insects.
Hampshire, where they encountered the generosity of local trail angels. These individuals provide various services for hikers, including accommodations and meals. The hiker was fortunate to find a woman who allowed them to stay in her home for free, a gesture that is not uncommon on the AT.
A Newfound Appreciation for Hanover
The hiker's stay in Hanover allowed them to experience the town's vibrant atmosphere, which is a stark contrast to the solitude of the woods. They were able to take a shower, wash their clothes, and enjoy a meal on the campus of Dartmouth College. This brief respite from the trail was a welcome change, and the hiker was grateful for the opportunity to experience the town's beauty.
The hiker acknowledges the beauty of Vermont but is now focused on moving forward, both physically and mentally. The journey on the AT is not without its challenges, but the support of trail angels and the generosity of strangers make it a more bearable and rewarding experience.
