Trail Magic and Generosity on the Pacific Crest Trail in Oregon
A hiker recounts a day of unexpected kindness and trail magic on the Pacific Crest Trail near Ashland, Oregon, including a lavish spread from a local trail angel and a ride from a supportive driver.

After a 20-mile hike into Ashland, Oregon, a group of Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers encountered a series of heartwarming acts of generosity that made their journey even more memorable. The day began with a refreshing stop at a trail magic station, where cold drinks awaited weary travelers. Little did they know, more surprises lay ahead.
## A Feast in the Wilderness
At Grouse Gap Shelter, the hikers were greeted by Skeeter, a local trail angel who had set up an impressive spread of food and drinks. His offerings included:
| Food/Drink | Description | |---------------------|---------------------------------| | Sandwiches | Full, hearty sandwiches | | Coconut Water | Refreshing and hydrating | | Iced Coffee | Energizing for the trail | | Smoked Salmon | A gourmet treat | | Mini Pies | Sweet and satisfying | | Peanut Butter Whiskey | A unique shot option | | Fruit and Veggie Trays | Fresh and nutritious | | Cold Beer | A welcome reward | | Sodas | Classic refreshments |
Skeeter, who had never hiked the PCT himself, explained that he enjoyed supporting hikers by hosting trail magic events once or twice a year. The group indulged in sandwiches, coconut water, fruit, and even a shot of peanut butter whiskey to celebrate their arrival in Oregon. Skeeter’s kindness left them feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the afternoon’s warm weather.
## A Ride to Town and a Well-Deserved Rest
By 4:00 PM, the hikers reached the interstate onramp, where a local woman pulled over to offer them a ride. Her children had hiked the PCT together a few years earlier, and she had long wanted to contribute by setting up coolers of drinks for hikers. Though she hadn’t found the time, she was more than happy to give them a lift to town. She shared stories of her children’s trail experiences and provided excellent recommendations for Ashland.
At their Airbnb, the hikers reunited with Flash and Birdman, who had arrived earlier. After 28 consecutive days of hiking, rest was a top priority. The group ordered Indian food for delivery, with the author enjoying a full container of Paneer Masala before drifting off to sleep. The following day would be a full zero day-a much-needed break to recover and recharge.
